In June 2024, Bangladesh was struck by a catastrophic natural disaster when heavy and sustained rainfall on June 18-19 caused devastating floods across the northeastern Haor region. In Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, rainfall reached 242 mm and 223 mm, respectively, far exceeding the average monthly rainfall. As a result, the floods, compounded by landslides, affected over 2.1 million people across the country. Approximately 30,000 individuals had to be relocated to shelters, and many displaced families were left without homes, wandering in search of shelter.
The impact was particularly severe in Sylhet, where nearly 75% of the district was submerged, directly affecting 825,000 people across 23 wards and 13 sub-districts. In Sunamganj, around 560,000 people were severely impacted. According to UNICEF, approximately 772,000 children were affected by the floods, and the European Commission reported at least 15 deaths due to landslides, with 51,000 people displaced. The floods also submerged large portions of agricultural land, including rice fields, causing significant losses.
In a separate crisis, the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, located in southeastern Bangladesh, were also devastated by heavy rainfall. At least 773 landslides occurred, leading to widespread flooding and resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people, including seven Rohingya refugees. The flood affected approximately 8,000 people in 1,200 shelters across 33 refugee camps.
